The history behind the musical

A Great Hunger came oe'r the Land

Not a Natural Disaster:

While potato blight struck, Ireland had plenty of food—most of it was exported under British rule. Pictured Bridget O'Donnell and her children after being evicted - she died shortly afterwards.

Providentialism Excuse:

Some blamed God, ignoring the thriving crops of wheat, barley, and oats that were taken from Ireland.

Overpopulation Myth:

Ireland had enough food for double its population—poverty continued even after millions died or emigrated.

The Great Famine (1845-1852):

One of the 19th century’s worst catastrophes, leading to mass starvation, disease, and Celtic Exodus.

Botha Buille - Irish Stick Fighting

This ancient martial art is making a comeback but has been part of Ireland's heritage going back well over 500 years. The opening scene of Celtic Exodus shows two sparring men stick fighting resulting in one man losing his ability to dance.

Mass Emigration & Death:

Over a million fled on dangerous voyages, many dying in coffin ships. This is depicted in the musical scene "The Crossing"

The True Cost:

Over a million dead, millions more displaced, and an Irish culture forever scarred.

Exported Food at Gunpoint:

Irish food was sent to feed England’s workers and armies while the Irish starved.

New York Famine Memorial, Battery Park

Irish Famine Memorial New York City

The Irish Hunger Memorial was created to raise awareness about the Great Famine of 1845-1852 and inspire action against hunger today and in the future. During the famine, 1.5 million Irish people died or were forced to leave their homeland. At the heart of the memorial is a real Famine-era cottage, donated by the Slack family from Attymass, County Mayo, Ireland. It has been carefully rebuilt on the half-acre site as a tribute to those who stayed behind and a symbol of solidarity with those who emigrated.
